| Miles Cain: Different Destinations | | (And The 'Music' Industry That Isn't) | | 01 October 2004 | | Miles Cain's new album is released at last, with 11 new songs, including the catchy Don't Care About The Weather, and a beautiful version of All Of Our Lives. As a work of art, it has a little to say about love and a little to say about life. As a commercial product, it has a lot to say about the state of the "music" industry.
It is often said that if the Beatles were starting out today, they wouldn't get a record deal. This is not true – pop music is a product of its time and the available technology, but great songs are great songs, and if John, Paul, George and Ringo were 20 today, they would be signed up faster than you can say 'Ob La Di, Ob La Da'!
However, it *is* the case that hundreds of acts plying there trade today (including McCartney and U2)would probably NOT get a deal on the strength of their current material. And yet that same current material sells by the truck-load, as U2's recent No.1 album attests. Why? Because the so-called "music" industry is actually a "musicians" industry, relying on the marketing of the faces, not the music they are singing, even in the cases of self-styled "serious" musicians like U2.
And this is bad news for artists like Miles Cain, who are turning out great music which will never be heard on your morning breakfast show. Sadly, it is easier (and therefore more profitable) for the industry to market Bono's shades than Miles Cain's catchy chords, which seems to us a real pity.
