| What About Brian | | (And The Elephant In The Room) | | 01 July 2007 | | What About Brian?, the thirty-something drama now showing on E4, is more 'pleasant diversion' than 'artistic masterpiece'. And that's fine by us! There is, however, an elephant in the room...
WAB? (as no one will ever refer to it again) is a sort-of Friends for the noughties generation - as is immediately clear from the credit sequence, where we meet the cast one-by-one, with a whacky look on every beautiful face, and a twinkle in every gorgeous eye! We are then cast into a web of relationships – Brain is Adam's school friend, Nicole is his sister… you know the drill! But contrary to our expectations (we nearly turned-off after 5 minutes) it is actually quite well executed. The script is witty, we like the characters, and it does the kind of issues which we can relate to - there is always something to discuss, as the characters' motivations spin them in circles of open relationships and closed secrets; while never resorting to the elastic plausibility of (say) Desperate Housewives. But there is a problem: while Brian has only just started showing in the UK, it has already been canceled in the US, after just two seasons, the first of which was very short. The disturbing consequence of this is that we know the drama will never be played-out - the plots will never be resolved. So we feel like on of those soap-opera heroines who know they are falling in love with a dying man. The elephant is in the cupboard... and it's dead! |

The point is we are all connected... through love... through loneliness... through one lamentable lapse in judgment!
