Shakira - An Aplology
(With Apologies To Private Eye)
01 September 2006
On various occasions in the past few years, FairgroundTown may have given the impression that Shakira was a poet and musical genius, whose towering artistic reputation would one day see her ranked alongside the likes of Bob Dylan and Brian Wilson in the pantheon of rock deities.

We now accept unreservedly that this was not true.

Following the commercial success of Hips Don't Lie, and the fact that the track was added to a re-released version of the album several months AFTER her long-term fans had already bought it, FairgroundTown now accepts that Shakira is, in fact, a pathetic, manufactured pop-star - possessed of all the credibility of Dannii Minogue, but none of the surname.

Ironically, it is also highly likely that the "triumph" of Hips Don't Lie is a classic pyrrhic victory, will actually damage Shakira's career over the longer-term.

Firstly, as a piece of music it is highly atypical, both of her work in-general, and of the album to which it was belatedly added – anyone buying Oral Fixation, or any of her other albums, on the strength of Hips Don't Lie is going to be sorely disappointed!

Secondly, the track is so below-par that her long-term fans (which included us) are going to be thinking very carefully before buying another Shakira record again. We, for one, will certainly need convincing, and we won't be buying the next album on pre-release - not until we've heard at least a couple of tracks to convince us she hasn't completely lost the plot.

Of course, like a love-sick teenager, we can't just "stop" adoring Shakira – Donde Estan Los Ladrones remains one of our favorite albums ever, and Estoy Aqui is still so beautiful it moves us to tears every time we hear it; but Hips Don't Lie is, frankly, embarrassing, and for that, we feel forced to apologize!

The point is we are all connected... through love... through loneliness... through one lamentable lapse in judgment!
